artist, storyteller, mama, tree-hugger
I am Ngāti Maniapoto (Ngāti Pare, Ngāti Uekaha, Ngāti Rereahu) and Pākehā. I was lucky enough to be brought up in Taranaki where the bush, the maunga and the sea brought solace, a sense of awe and a deep reverence for nature. The tidal pools were a second home, and in that in-between space where land and sea meet, where colourful creatures of slime and spike lurk, I felt safe to be myself.
Spirituality, interconnectedness, liminal creativity and domestic magic are a few threads of exploration in my creative practice currently. Like many indigenous creatives my art-making is fluid, intuitive, curious, heart and wairua-led, tūpuna inspired, multi-disciplinary and driven by a deep love of process and experimentation. I have taught photography and creative writing classes at Massey University, Victoria University and RISD (Rhode Island School of Design, USA). I have exhibited both here and overseas and I hold a Master's degree in Photography from RISD and an MA in Creative Writing from Victoria University. Currently I live in Kirikiriroa with my whānau.
